Is It Really Still News???
We're sorry for disappearing for all of this time... Unfortunately, we are both grad students and at some point we realized that running this website conflicted too much with waking up at noon our work. But we are hoping to return soon, probably in a more collaborative form.
In the meantime, we would love to hear from you. Did you actually read and like this website? Would you like to contribute to stories and be part of the 'It's Still News' team? If so, please email us at suggestions@itstillnews.com.
Don Imus: The Return Of The Pasty-Faced Pimp?!?
Now that Don Imus has been publicly shamed, fired and replaced by Paris Hilton as the 'Worst Person Ever' he has all but disappeared from the public eye. So what has he been up to lately? Is he coming back? As always, we at It's Still News are here to provide you with all the answers. Continue Reading...
El Comandante No Es Bueno
First, to our moms and the three or four other people who actually read this website: we deeply apologize for the recent dearth of articles. We are now back at full strength and expect the articles to start pouring in again. To start, we offer a quick update on the status on everyone's favorite communist, the seemingly immortal Fidel Castro. Continue Reading...
The Global March of Democracy: Thailand
Those of you visiting our site during its first couple of months of existence may be wondering why we have given so little attention to Asia, the continent where the billions of our future masters and overlords now reside. In all honesty, the reason is simple: we just don't know very much about it nor do we hear much about Asia in the North American media. However, one story that took place in Asia that did register a blip on the radar and deserves some attention was the the military coup that occurred in Thailand on September 19, 2006. Borat 'Jews' Frat Boys Out Of Their Money
In the weeks following the release of the Borat movie a number of lawsuits sprung up against Sacha Baron Cohen by people who felt embarrassed and taken advantage of. Most notable among these were the 2 frat boys who got drunk with Borat and spewed racist, anti-semitic and sexist remarks, and the villagers from Romania who played the Kazaks in Borat's home village. Shooting Drug Smugglers Doesn't Pay
With all of the talk this week over the involvement of illegal immigrants in a plot to attack Fort Dix, many of us have probably forgotten about the previous scandal that was politically manipulated in the immigration debate: the case of the two border guards who were arrested for shooting a drug smuggler in Texas. Continue Reading...
Race War! Race War! Sean Bell Case Update
Every few years a police brutality case comes along that has all the
requirements for a quick burst of national media attention: race, race
and race. The latest of these cases was that of Sean Bell, a black man
who was shot and killed outside a strip club on the night before his
wedding, November 25 2006, by a group of undercover cops. Immediately
following the incident there was the usual knee-jerk responses both
from those who wanted to condemn the cops and those who were ready to
jump to their defense without having all of the evidence in. And of
course the hypocrite reverend Al Sharpton saw another opportunity for self-promotion. Continue Reading...
Minimum Wage Update
Apparently, a deal has finally been reached on a minimum wage increase. Someone in Congress must be reading our site. The minimum wage will go up to $7.25 and in exchange small businesses will get $5 billion in tax cuts. It doesn't appear as though the President will veto the bill.
Is It Safe To Bring Alcohol (Or Dogs) On Cabs Yet?
Every city has its own unique problems with cab drivers. In Boston, it's cheaper to rent a car for the day than take a cab a couple of blocks. In New York, cab drivers don't like to pick up black people, even famous ones like Danny Glover. And in Minneapolis, cab drivers will refuse you if you are carrying any alcohol in your luggage, or even if you have a seeing eye dog with you. Continue Reading...
Hey Democrats, Where's Our Money?
During the 2006 Congressional election campaign, the Democrats made numerous promises which everyone knew they would never be able to keep (e.g. reducing corruption, getting out of Iraq, improving the "tone" in Washington, etc.). However, one of their promises—increasing the U.S. Federal Minimum Wage—seemed like a slam dunk. After all, the federal minimum wage (currently set at $5.15) has not been increased since 1997, and at least 80% of the American people favor an increase. Well, the Democrats have been in power for almost four months and we are still waiting with bated breath. Continue Reading...
Terrorist Where Are They Now: Mullah "Taliban Commander of the Faithful" Omar
|
|
Those of you with really, really great long term memories probably remember the name of Mullah Omar, the sexy beast whose picture you see on the left. Omar, the spiritual and political leader of the Taliban was declared "Wanted: Dead or Alive" along with his buddy and supposed father-in-law Osama Bin Laden after 9/11. Also, in a move that must have made this Islamic fundamentalist ascetic proud, a $10 million bounty was placed on his head. So, what is Mr. Omar up to these days? In the five-plus years since then, Omar has not only managed to avoid capture, but he has even managed to rebuild the Taliban to a large extent and is now causing the U.S. and the current Afghan government all kinds of headaches.
